Sweden backs Turkey's EU bid PDF Print E-mail
Sweden is in favour of Turkey joining the European Union, according to a diplomat.

Christer Asp, the Swedish ambassador to the country, urged the country to continue with its bid to become a member of the international group, even though some people were against it.

He compared the current situation to that faced by Sweden when it made moves to join the EU, as it also faced opposition from some quarters.

However, he stated that it successfully managed to overcome these objections and be admitted.

Mr Asp added that other member states would directly benefit from closer relations with the country.

He commented: "Turkey must continue its EU process.

"Turkish membership in the EU will present an advantage for other countries as well."

The country's bid to join the organisation has also been publicly supported by figures from the British government, including prime minister Gordon Brown and foreign secretary David Miliband.
